Mama & baby basics...


38 weeks +

  • Baby is about 19 - 20 inches long
  • Weight is appx 6 - 8 pounds
  • Baby is fully delveloped and most likely can survive outside the womb
  • Lungs are now mature
  • The baby's skin is smooth and pink
  • Baby can blink, turn her head and grasp objects
  • Drops down in the pelvis to prepare for birth

Keep talking and singing to your baby!

By the 3rd trimester, your baby's ears are fully functioning and can hear your voice and sounds.


32 - 35 weeks

By the end of your 8th month

your baby:

  • Is about 18 - 20 long
  • Can weigh between 5 and 6 pounds
  • Gaining about 1/2 pound per week, mostly in fat deposits
  • May do more twisting and wriggling and less kicking as his space is getting tighter
  • May have moved head down
  • Sleeps through regular periods of REM and deep sleep
  • Baby's brain is growing rapidly
  • Most of the internal organs are fully developed (although the lungs may need more time)
  • Baby hiccups


9th month

  • Increased Braxton Hicks contractions
  • Back pain
  • Pelvic pain
  • Frequent need to pee (like every 10 minutes!)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Excitement, anxiety, fear


32 - 35 weeks

Can you feel?

  • Baby's feet jammed in your ribs
  • Pressure in your cervix as baby stretches down
  • A waddle in your walk
  • Loose joints as your body produces relaxins to help widen the pelvis for easier delivery

Typical physical symptoms

  • Feeling Braxton Hicks contractions
  • Colostrum leakage in breasts
  • Constipation
  • Heartburn
  • Indigestion
  • Bloating
  • Bleeding gums
  • Leg cramps
  • Swelling
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Lower back and leg pain
